Yes, that's a 2" thick pork chop at Patti's 1880's Settlement, Grand Rivers, KY  and beside it is a warm loaf of bread baked in a clay flower pot -- served with strawberry butter.

We're staying the weekend at Green Turtle Bay.  It's a beautiful marina with many amenities and lots of our Looper friends are here.  This morning I went to the indoor pool and swam 20 laps (which would equate to 10 laps on a metered pool) and then took an aqua zumba class taught by Natalie.  She was very good, but there was difficulty with the sound system so only she could really hear the music. Afterward a few of us sat in the sauna -- what a lovely morning. :)

Our anniversary celebration continues...this evening we had dinner at the famed Patti's 1880's Settlement Restaurant.  They offer a free shuttle service and we asked to be picked up an hour before our reservation time so we could walk through the "settlement" --- and what a unique experience that is.  The whole place reminded both of us of Zaberer's -- "Minutes Away" from Atlantic City. Zaberer's had all sorts of entertaining things to do while you waited and Patti's is the same.  The whole area must be several acres.

Patti's has two sections now, one is called Patti's and the other is Mr. Bill's.  Patti and Bill Tullar were the original owners when it was just Patti's -- their specialty being 2" thick pork chops.  When their business was burgeoning, they added on and opened Mr. Bill's serving fried chicken and ribs.  Seems that most of the customers at Mr. Bill's, right next door to Patti's, always asked for those pork chops. So that became the specialty of both places.  Tonight we were in Mr. Bill's. Patti and Bill are gone now, but their four children run the business and run it well.  Their combined dining rooms accommodate 600 people and they have many turnovers because their food is so good and the service is great.  Melissa, the manager who picked us up, told us 3/4 of their entree business is those fabulous pork chops.

When the shuttle arrived it had started to rain so I took my little underwater camera for pictures of the "settlement" which is very interesting as you will see from the photos.  There are beautiful gardens and things to do, little shops and pleasant walkways and even a small wedding chapel.  They cater to weddings and private parties -- on Patti's side, you and your group can have a special celebration in a little private house -- or a couple can have a private dinner outside in a private little enclosure.  They have a few peacocks, a llama or an alpaca -- not sure which -- and an old dusty turkey (guarded by a couple cute cats).

So dinner was wonderful.  We shared an entree -- which for $2 they will split in the kitchen -- and we got an extra spinach salad with oranges, thin sliced almonds and a wonderful bacon dressing that was citrus-y and very good.  In fact, next time I make that dressing, I'm adding a little OJ.  So half an entree was plenty of food -- plus they serve delicious warm bread baked in clay flower pots and they serve it with strawberry butter.  They serve sweet tea in mason jars and keep refilling your jar.  Everything was absolutely delicious.

Now for the desserts and you know how we are crazy about desserts.  The signature pie is called "sawdust pie" and the recipe is printed on their brochure which I will copy here for your eating enjoyment.  We asked Brandy, our waitress what her favorite pie is and she said the pecan chocolate chip so I ordered that and Ralph ordered the sawdust pie.

Next thing I know, they brought out a small cherry cheesecake with candles atop -- and the whole waitstaff from that room sang to us for our anniversary "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."  Of course, Ralph took a movie of that on his cell phone.  You can see it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/ralphyost1 -- along with the gazillion other videos he has taken of our trip highlights. We brought home our leftover desserts and will enjoy them tomorrow.

                                                 Patti's Famous Sawdust Pie
7 egg whites, unbeaten
1-1/2 c. granulated sugar
1-1/2 c. graham cracker crumbs
1-1/2 c. pecans
1-1/2 c. coconut
9-inch unbaked pie shell

Mix all ingredients together and stir by hand.  Pour into unbaked pie shell.  Bake in preheated 325 degree oven until glossy and set -- about 25-30 minutes.

DO NOT OVERBAKE!  Serve warm with sliced bananas and whipped cream.
Serves 8.

A beautiful waterfall -- and the little camera's quality does not do it justice.

The Settlement is laid out beautifully with many gardens

A memorial to Patti and Bill

Three desserts, including the cherry cheesecake anniversary dessert

We're both crazy about bread too -- and this warm loaf served in a clay pot with strawberry butter tops our list of favorites.
