We're still in Traverse City, MI where it's been raining on and off since early this morning. We met Jim and Lisa Favors for breakfast at The Omelette Shoppe on Front Street. It was so nice to share breakfast and conversation with Jim and Lisa. They've done the Loop a couple times and are on the Board of the AGLCA (America's Great Loop Cruisers Association).
Late morning we took a walk downtown to the post office to mail packages to the grandkids then picked up a few things at Maxbauer's Meat Market on Union Street I highly recommend this immaculately clean, well-stocked grocery store with beautiful produce and a large selection of fresh meats and deli items at reasonable prices. It's an excellent place for provisioning within walking distance of the marina.
Next we stopped at the Grand Traverse Pie Company -- for what else? -- cherry pie. What a busy place that is with a line out the door! I confirmed that the cherries were from Traverse City and the waitress told me that all the cherries this year came from the award-winning Smeltzer Farms which date back to 1872. We bought a mini cherry pie and it is truly delicious and the crust melts in your mouth.
When we arrived back to the boat, two local firemen and a police officer were on the dock -- seems that sometime in the past four days, two gas tanks were stolen off the fire department rescue boat docked next to us along the bulkhead. I thought I'd taken a photo of Say Good-Bye that might be helpful and show the gas tanks under the seat of the rescue boat which might help pinpoint the day when the theft took place, since we arrived yesterday afternoon. The photo I have only shows the bow of the rescue boat, so it wasn't helpful. Dreadful that anyone would dare come into a marina and steal gas tanks from anyone, let alone the rescue boat clearly marked Fire Department. :(
We have an update on Ralph's Mom. Last evening she had emergency surgery to insert a tube to drain fluid and blood that was accumulating in the front of the brain. The surgery took about an hour and went well. She was awake afterward and responsive to the doctor's inquiries. She will remain in intensive care in the Atlantic City Division of the Medical Center, then when she improves, will be transferred to a regular room for a few more days, and following that, she'll return to Betty Bacharach Rehabilitation Center for resumption of PT and OT. Please continue praying for her and for Jimmy who is also having a difficult time with all of this.
The skies are gray and the weather forecast models on the web show rain and thunderstorms all around us. So far we're just experiencing rain. We're hanging in just relaxing. I've got bbq spare ribs (from Maxbauer's) in the crock pot and the whole boat smells so good. Here are a few photos of today's activities:
