Early this morning we left Traverse City and headed north through the western arm of Grand Traverse Bay 18 miles to Suttons Bay. This is a well-protected anchorage midway up the eastern shore of the Leelanau Peninsula. "The Village of Suttons Bay was established in the early 19th century and was used as a port by schooners transporting lumber from the area to emerging metropolises of mid-America." -- That's a quote from the brochure and town map.
The village is quaint and beautifully kept. There are many interesting shops, eateries, a movie theater, bed and breakfasts, and many convenient professional businesses. On our jaunt through town we first came upon the Ice Cream Factory and it features "Moomers" ice cream -- this was recommended to us by two firemen from Traverse City...especially the Cherries Moobilee flavor. We had had a light lunch so I enjoyed a cherries moobilee cone and Ralph had a German chocolate cake cone -- they were delicious, of course.
There's a nice park along the anchorage where we played fetch with Striper. She really needed the exercise and had a lot of fun fetching a stick -- although unlike the ball, she wants to run away with the stick and not bring it back. The water is so crystal clear here, we can see to the bottom in 20' of water. The water is about 65 degrees and this evening a swimmer passed by our stern. We met Marlee and Stephen on their shake-down cruise of their new boat and we had pizza together at the Roman Wheel -- best pizza in town!
