We weighed anchor at 7:50 AM. It was 57 degrees and brisk, but we enjoyed fair skies and following seas as we continued north across Lake Champlain. It was a picturesque ride and a perfect day. We stuck our nose into Partridge Harbor -- a tiny anchorage just north of Westport, NY tucked in around rock formations, barely discernible from the Lake. There are many beautiful anchorages like this all along both shores. The Palisades in the Adirondacks on the New York side of Lake Champlain are stunning.
We continued on Lake Champlain, crossing over to the Vermont side to the entrance of Otter Creek. Otter Creek winds gracefully for 7 beautiful miles with trees lining each bank. It was sunny and warm -- 71 around noon -- and we thoroughly enjoyed the ride. At the end of Otter Creek is the small City of Vergennes, Vermont first settled in the 1760s. Vergennes is the third city to be incorporated in the United States. The most striking thing about Vergennes is the hydroelectric power plant and spectacular waterfall where Otter Creek ends. We're tied up at the city dock with water and electric. However, the electrical connection leaves a little to be desired (see photo below). It was a warm sunny day and Ralph washed the entire boat outside while I cleaned inside. :)

The electrical connection runs over the dock and across the road to the electrical box NOT GOOD! We moved the trash can near the connection so that cars don't run over it. |

From the south shore of Long Island, my brothers and I used our Dad's Wheeler and visited Partridge Harbor, Otter Creek, and Vergennes in 1949, 1951, 1953, and 1955; and with my wife and our own children in 1971, using our 32 foot Owens. Partridge Harbor should be a mandatory overnight stopover for any visitor to the Lake. It is an exceptionally beautiful spot. William Kurtz wkurtz1@verizon.net

ReplyDeleteHi William: Thank you so much for your comments about Partridge Harbor, Otter Creek and Vergennes. Do you find these areas to be as pristine now (from my photos) as they were years ago when you and your family visited them? We didn't stay in Partridge Harbor, but we loved seeing it. As I recall, the opening wasn't visible from Lake Champlain -- which is something we liked about it. Will you ever get back there, do you think? That entire portion of our travels was spectacular!
