I was unable to post yesterday. We traveled from Willsboro, NY to Valcour Island, NY where we had no cell phone or internet connectivity. We met some friendly boaters also anchored there.
Valcour Island is historic for one of the major Revolutionary War battles fought on Lake Champlain. The island boasts 7 miles of hiking trails and 5 magnificent anchorages. It is designated as a "New York State Primitive Area." There are no facilities for trash and they ask that you leave the place as pristine as you found it. We stuck our nose in several of the anchorages and decided upon Sloop Cove. The water is so clear you can practically see to the bottom in 17' depths. We dinghied ashore and walked about a quarter mile of the hiking trail with Striper but we saw poison ivy and were concerned with ticks so we didn't pursue a longer walk -- it is beautiful.
The wind direction changed to South overnight and contrary to what the cruising guides say, the rollers came in and by 5:30 AM taking the dinghy ashore was a challenge for the captain and his dog. At 7:45 AM we weighed anchor, also a challenge because that's my job. We contended with 20 kt. winds and whitecaps on the Lake with a forecast of more of the same for the next two days.
