ATTENTION ALL BOATERS ON THE LOWER BLACK WARRIOR-TOMBIGBEE WATERWAY:

Yesterday, October 28, 2012  while coming down the Black Warrior-TomBigbee Waterway, we saw a dog running the sandy beach at MM 46, also called Webb's Bar on the chart. The dog was on the RDB and the inside of the turn. When we first saw the dog, we didn't think too much about it. It was probably someone's dog who was in a cabin nearby, etc.

Last evening, however,  we heard from another boater who was one day ahead of us and also saw the same dog at this place. Now we are more inclined to believe this dog has been abandoned and probably in need of food....and possibly even a good home. He was following our boat as we made our way around the turn....he was running along the water's edge.

The other boater who saw him yesterday said he blew his horn and the dog tried to come out in the water towards his boat.....all of which leads me to conclude tonight that the dog is probably very hungry.

If any of you are coming down the Black Warrior-TomBigbee Waterway at MM 46, you might consider taking your dinghy over and providing some food for this animal. Better yet, perhaps you would like to rescue the animal. See above photo.

Thanks
R.

  1. I have posted this message on the Welsh Terrier list I belong to. If there is anyone on the list anywhere near this poor dog, you can bet they will find him and take him home!!! Thanks for posting.

  2. One of our WT owners in Alabama has forwarded your message to the rescue group. Hopefully someone is close enough to go look for this poor soul.

  3. Hi Sally: Thank you so much for your prompt and kind response. The exact location is lat: 31 degrees 08.863 minutes North and 87 degrees, 56.555 minutes West -- the town is Mt. Vernon and the strip of beach is near a commercial something.

I called the Animal Shelter at Mt. Vernon today and got no answer so I called the Mt. Vernon Fire Department and spoke to David Kober -- he said he would look into the matter -- said he knows exactly where this strip of beach is.

I hope someone from your group, the fire department or the animal shelter rescues this poor little dog.

I'll let you know if I learn anything new and would appreciate it if you' let us know if you learn anything new also. Thank you again for your kindness.

  4. Why the Welsh Terrier list? This dog looks nothing like a WT. Tail and ears too long. Too tall, muzzle wrong shape, haircoat is slick not wire, body shape all wrong. Looks like a hound of some sort.

    1. Hi Margie: I don't believe Sally's message indicates that she thinks the dog is a Welsh Terrier. A member of the WT group that Sally belongs to lives in Alabama and has forwarded the message to an Alabama rescue group. The location is the connection, not the breed.

I'm grateful to anyone willing to try to rescue this little dog.
